Summertime Series #3 - Transfer and Organize your Photos While on Vacation

Greetings fellow photographers…we had so much fun last time talking about camera maintenance while on vacation that we’re not ready to go home yet! So today we’ll continue our Summer Series with some pointers on how to transfer and organize your photos before you come home from your trip.

Vacation photos are the photos you’ll want to print and keep close to you year-round to remind you of that magical trip from the summer of 2007. They may include breathtaking scenic shots, ocean sunsets, obscure attractions or landmarks, long-lost relatives, Dad changing the tire, carefree kids, or old friends. The problem is, after taking hundreds of shots, you are faced with the daunting task of organizing them, a task which often gets put off for several months, or ignored completely! This year, make your life easier by utilizing your online photo account to instantly transfer and organize your priceless memories from your summer vacation. Here are a few strategies:

Backup your photos. We’ve all heard horror stories of people accidentally losing their digital photos. Imagine this: you book the family on a whale watching excursion, and after several cloudy hours, the sun breaks through and creates a perfect rainbow. You place your family in the foreground, and at that moment, a humpback whale surfaces in the background. You snap the photo, no one blinks, and you have a perfect shot of your family on the ocean with a humpback whale and a rainbow in the background. A few days later, you pull out your camera to show Uncle Joe the incredible shot you took, and you accidentally press Erase All, deleting your perfect whale shot, along with all the other photos from the trip. Now, you may be thinking, “That won’t happen to me.” Famous last words! Why take the risk?

Backing up your photos is a necessity in this digital era. With your online account, you can transfer your photos from your camera to your account on the fly, ensuring that your priceless vacation photos are safe and secure, no matter what buttons you accidentally press. The best part is, you don’t need your home computer to do it; all you need is an Internet connection and a minute or two. Think of it as a free safe deposit box for all your photos. It’s that easy!

Memory card full? Don’t buy another! While we all love that our brand new digital camera will capture large megapixel images, there is a downside to all this wonderful technology: it doesn’t take long to fill your memory card. Suppose you are three days into a week long vacation, and your memory card fills up. Instead of trying to find a camera store and paying tourist-trap prices to buy another memory card you’ll never use again, just transfer your images to your online account, clear your card, and keep shooting. Your images will be safely stored in your account, and you’ll avoid the hassle and cost of handling multiple cards on your trip.

Organize your photos into albums. Another fantastic advantage of transferring your images instantly while on vacation is the ability to create separate albums to organize your photos. Once you get home, you are faced with the realities of unpacking, catching up at work, and settling back into your routine, and when you finally get around to organizing your photos, it can be a difficult chore. Was that waterfall in Montana or Canada? Was that cousin Norma from Des Moines or cousin Daisy from Little Rock? Every time you transfer your photos, you can create a new album in your account to help you keep them organized. For example, you can create a new album for each city you visit on a road trip, or for each day of your vacation. Then, when you get home, you can organize the details, edit the photos, insert captions, and so on.

Transferring and organizing is as easy as 1-2-3! To organize your photos while on vacation, just follow these steps:

  1. Log on to your online account from any computer connected to the Internet.
  2. Transfer the photos following the simple instructions provided (don't forget the cord or compact flash card you need to connect your camera to a computer).
  3. Organize them into albums and enjoy!
No matter where your travels take you this summer, don’t forget your camera! And remember to use your online account to transfer and store your photos – they can make great Holiday gifts in a few months! Now if only traveling to your vacation destination was this easy…!
